Forget quiet nature walks. You come to Jericho Mountain to get dirty. Situated just outside Berlin, New Hampshire, this park is an absolute paradise for throttle-happy riders. We're talking over 80 miles of rugged, interconnected trails built specifically for ATVs, UTVs, and trail bikes. You can literally ride right out of your campsite. Thats a huge deal. No loading and unloading trailers every single morning. Just fire up your rig, hit the gas, and kick up some serious dust on trails that wind through dense northern woods.

But it's not all engine noise. After a sweaty ride, you can cool off at Jericho Lake. It has a sandy beach. Perfect for launching a kayak or swimming. Anglers can toss a line in for trout, too. Winter changes everything. The dirt trails freeze over, welcoming snowmobiles instead of ATVs. They even rent out rustic cabins equipped with woodstoves for the cold nights. Cozy, but basic. Honestly, its the ultimate escape for people who prefer horsepower to hiking boots.
History of the Area
Long before ATVs buzzed through these woods, loggers ruled the hills. They hacked down spruce and fir. The Brown Company, a massive paper and pulp giant based in the nearby city of Berlin, owned much of this rugged timberland for decades. They dragged logs down steep slopes to feed the insatiable mills on the Androscoggin River. It was dangerous work. Actually, the city took over chunks of the acreage in the mid-1900s to protect its water supply. But timber harvesting kept going anyway.

In the 1970s, the local government built a massive earthen flood-control dam. This created a 130-acre reservoir. You can still see the concrete spillway cutting through the dirt. In 2005, officials bought the initial 7,200 acres to set up a public motorized trail network. Now, riders kick up dust on trails that follow those old logging paths. Look closely in the brush. You might spot stone foundations from long-gone homesteads. History buried under tire tracks.

Picnicking
Forget stuffy roadside pull-offs. At Jericho Mountain State Park, the best spot to eat your sandwiches is right on the sandy shores of Jericho Lake, where you can watch kayakers paddle by while listening to the distant hum of ATVs climbing the muddy mountain trails. You can drive your truck right up to the day-use area. It costs just a few bucks. Once you're in, you'll find plenty of heavy wooden tables scattered under the birch trees, giving you enough shade to keep your cooler from melting in the July heat.

Actually, if you have a big group, you should reserve the timber-framed picnic shelter. It has charcoal grills nearby. Kids can burn off their energy on the lakeside playground, or you can all take a quick dip from the beach to wash off the trail dust. Bring your own trash bags. This is a carry-in, carry-out park, so you have to pack up your hot dog wrappers when you leave. Just pure NH woods.
