History of the Area
Located in Douglas County, Oregon, this park is home to the Umpqua River Lighthouse which stands at its heart. The lighthouse was first built in 1857 but due to poor construction and erosion from harsh weather conditions it collapsed a few years later.

In response to the loss of the original structure, another one was constructed on higher ground about half a mile away from where the initial building stood. This second iteration of Umpqua's beacon came into operation by December 1894 with an impressive lens imported all way from France that projected light visible up till twenty-one miles offshore.

The area surrounding this iconic landmark became increasingly popular over time leading authorities towards developing recreational facilities around it for public use. In fact, during World War II before becoming officially recognized as state property; these grounds were used by military personnel stationed nearby who enjoyed fishing here off-duty hours.

By late-1940s post-war period saw surplus federal land being transferred back under control local governments or repurposed civilian uses such as parks recreation areas etc., thus paving path eventual establishment what we now know today's beloved destination among locals tourists alike offering camping sites picnic spots along beautiful coastal views rich wildlife diversity including deer sea lions seals various bird species native region.
