Within the park are the Pioneer Heritage Center and restored historic buildings, which provide a glimpse of North Dakota's homesteading heritage. An early homestead preserves North Dakota's pioneer spirit, while the Gunlogson State Nature Preserve, a 200-acre natural wooded area along the Tongue River, provides a sanctuary for plants, birds and wildlife.
