HARTFORD BEACH STATE PARK
Big Stone Lake provides the setting for this popular camping and picnic area nestled in the shade of a native wooded forest.
Along the many hiking trails, you can observe wildlife, prairie plants and scenic vistas.
Runoff from melting glaciers 10,000 years ago created the river Warren. A section of the river is known today as Big Stone Lake. Rugged rock-strewn bluffs and scenic timbered shorelines from the setting of this park.
The first Europeans came to this area in 1678 when French explorers from Montreal and Quebec came searching and found fur-bearing animals. An excellent trading business with area American Indians prompted the English to claim the area.
1. Hartford Beach State Park offers a designated swimming area on Big Stone Lake.
2. Lifeguards are not provided, so swim at your own risk.
3. Swimming is free with park entrance fee.
4. The beach has soft sand and clear water for swimmers to enjoy.
5. There's ample space for sunbathing near the shoreline after swimming sessions.
6. The lake also provides opportunities for snorkeling due to its clarity.
7. Children should be supervised while in or around the water as there are no depth markers.
Located on the shores of Big Stone Lake, you can enjoy fishing for walleye, northern pike and yellow perch. The lake also houses bluegill and bullhead species. Boat ramps are available for easy access to water-based activities including angling adventures.

Remember to follow all safety rules while cycling in public spaces, including wearing a helmet at all times.
Cycling off-road or creating new paths is strictly prohibited to protect local flora and fauna from damage.
For more challenging rides, consider exploring nearby state parks with established mountain bike trails instead.
Five hiking trails take visitors past historic sites and scenic overlooks, including burial mounds and a prehistoric village site. Interpretive trail guidebooks are available.
