William Mitchell State Park is a popular camping, fishing and boating destination. The 334-acre park is situated between Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac and provides an excellent opportunity to view a variety of wildlife on the outskirts of Cadillac. The park was officially dedicated in 1919. A historic canal connects the two lakes and runs directly through the park.

Passes
The Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds and state trail parking lots. Details and information on how to obtain your Michigan Recreation Passport can be found by visiting the MICHIGAN RECREATION PASSPORT web page.
Swimming
1. William Mitchell State Park offers a sandy beach for swimming on Lake Cadillac.
2. The park does not provide lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.
3. Swimming is allowed during daylight hours only in designated areas of the lake.
4. Children should always be supervised while swimming due to deep water and possible currents.
5. There are no indoor or pool facilities available; all swimming is done in natural bodies of water within the park boundaries.

Boating
The park offers a variety of boating options, with access to both Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac. There is a historic canal that connects the two lakes which can be used for canoeing or kayaking. Motorized boats are also allowed on these waters, providing opportunities for water skiing and fishing as well. Boat rentals are available within the park if visitors do not have their own equipment.
Fishing
Lakes Mitchell and Cadillac are noted as fine walleye fisheries. The 1,150-acre Lake Cadillac is an extremely popular attraction and anglers can expect good catches of perch, walleye, panfish and bass. The quarter-mile canal that connects the two lakes is a popular place for children to shore fish in the park, and in the evening, many fish for bullheads.

Bicycling
Biking enthusiasts can explore the park's multi-use trails. However, be aware these are shared with hikers and runners.

The area offers a variety of terrains for different skill levels but always exercise caution when biking.

Some paths may have loose gravel or steep inclines which require careful navigation to avoid accidents.

Remember that helmets are mandatory on all bike routes within this location due to safety regulations in place.

During winter months, cycling options might be limited because snowfall could make some tracks inaccessible or dangerous.

Always check local weather conditions before setting out as sudden changes can affect trail quality significantly.
Trails
The Heritage Nature Trail starts at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center and is about 2.5 miles in length. The trail is actually a study area that supports a variety of plants and wildlife, including whitetail deer, wild turkeys, beavers, great blue heron and other species of waterfowl. The trail is mostly a woodchip path with bridges and boardwalks for an easy hike around the wetland areas.
