History of the Area
In May 2001 Nolin Lake State Park opened to the public. The 5,795-acre lake created from the impoundment of the Nolin River in 1963 and the 333-acre park are located along the northern edge of Mammoth Cave National Park in Edmonson County. Nolin Lake State Park is an excellent place to camp and fish. The park has 32 campsites with hookups for water and electricity along with 40 primitive campsites. There is a beach, shower and laundry facilities, playgrounds, and the lake has an abundance of bass, catfish, crappie and, walleye for great fishing.

The area surrounding Nolin Lake State Park is topographically diverse. Edmonson County is part of cave country. Mammoth Cave is the largest explored cave system in the world. Since its discovery by early settlers in the late 1700s, millions of visitors have come to explore the more than 340 miles of known passageways. Mammoth Cave National Park covers 51,000 acres. Edmondson County was formed January 12, 1825 and named for Capt. John Edmondson of Virginia, who was killed at the Battle of the River Raisin in the War of 1812. Edmondson is a rural county that has a gently rolling terrain that in places gives way to steep hills. The county has both Nolin and Green Rivers flowing within its boundaries.
