Visit the birthplace home of the only Missourian ever elected President of the United States - Harry S Truman. Born May 8, 1884, in a downstairs bedroom of a small frame house in Lamar, Harry Truman was the son of John Anderson and Martha Ellen (Young) Truman.

The Truman birthplace, which the family occupied until Harry was 11 months old, was built between 1880 and 1882. The Trumans purchased the 20- by 28-foot house as newlyweds in 1882 for $685. Visitors today can view its four downstairs rooms and two upstairs rooms, as well as the smokehouse, well and outhouse located in the back. The modest furnishings inside the house and the surrounding landscaping accurately represent a typical home of its style during the time the Trumans resided in Lamar. It has neither electricity nor indoor plumbing.

The United Auto Workers donated the home to the state in 1959 for preservation as a state historic site. President Truman himself attended the dedication on April 19, 1959. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Like Truman's trademark country mannerisms and down-to-earth sensibility, the small home possesses an essence of Missouri hospitality that seems to welcome every visitor with open arms.
Swimming
1. Harry S Truman State Park offers a designated swimming beach on the shores of Truman Lake.
2. The sandy beach is open to swimmers during daylight hours, with no lifeguard service provided.
3. Swimming outside the marked boundaries or after dark is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
4. Visitors can also swim from boats in the lake but must follow all state boating laws and regulations.
5. There are restrooms and changing facilities located near by for convenience after swimming activities at this park's location.

Boating
The park offers a variety of boating options for visitors. There are two marinas and several boat ramps available, providing easy access to the lake's open waters which is popular with sailboats, motorboats and personal watercrafts. Boat rentals including pontoon boats are also offered at one of the marinas. Fishing enthusiasts can take advantage of fishing docks or rent a fishing boat as well.
Fishing
The park offers abundant fishing opportunities in its clear waters. Anglers can catch largemouth bass, crappie and catfish here. There are also bluegill and walleye populations present for sportfishing enthusiasts to enjoy. Fishing from the shoreline or a boat is allowed throughout the year.

Picnicking
Harry S Truman State Park offers picnic tables, grills and shelters. It also has a playground near the picnic area.
Bicycling
Explore the park's 10-mile bicycle trail, but be aware it is shared with hikers and equestrians.

The terrain varies from flat to moderately steep hills; beginners should proceed carefully.

Riders must yield to pedestrians and horseback riders for safety reasons.

Biking after dark isn't allowed due to potential hazards on trails like rocks or tree roots.

Helmets are strongly recommended as some sections of the path can be challenging even for experienced cyclists.

Remember that off-trail biking is prohibited in order protect local wildlife habitats.

Ensure your bike has a bell or horn - this helps alert other users of your approach.

Always carry water, especially during summer months when temperatures rise significantly.

Be cautious around blind corners where visibility may be limited by foliage or topography changes.

Birding
The park offers diverse birding opportunities with over 200 species spotted. Birdwatchers can see waterfowl, shorebirds and songbirds in various habitats like forests, grasslands and wetlands. The area is also a great spot for viewing migratory birds during spring or fall seasons.

Visitor Comments, Memories and Reviews
December 5 love the park, but very disappointed by Sandman 47 Nixa, Mo
park review stars; one to five just returned home from hstp, visit was good until the last day at checkout and found all dump station valves locked. nobody around, called sheriffs office, a nice lady found someone that said they could not be opened up. this upset me greatly. why were we not told this, or the area closed off with barricades? charging full price for limited services is not right in my mind, what do you think? we drove 20 miles out of our way and paid to empty our tanks. doubt we will return anytime soon!
October 16 We loved our visit there by C.A. and Kathi
park review stars; one to five We were very fond of the 3 camphost couples. But unfortunately, we did not get their last names and phone numbers or email addresses or if we did we can not locate them and we would love to contact them. The campsites and amenities were great and all 3 of the couples who volunteered there were friendly and even fed us a catfish lunch.
