Where the deer and the buffalo play! Foss State Park is a wildlife wonderland in western Oklahoma. Enjoy our resident herd of bison or take in some of western Oklahoma's best fishing and boating.



Foss State Park is located in western Oklahoma on Foss Lake. Recreational activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding (no rentals), fishing, boating, swimming and camping. Facilities include 110 RV campsites, 42 tent sites, an equestrian camp, picnic areas, group picnic shelters, comfort stations with showers, lighted boat ramps, boat storage, boat and jet ski rentals, playgrounds, swimming beach and marina.
History of the Area
Located in western Oklahoma, the park was established in 1960. It spans over 1,749 acres and includes Foss Reservoir. The reservoir is a key feature of the area, created by damming Washita River for flood control purposes.

The land has been inhabited since prehistoric times with evidence suggesting Native American presence dating back thousands of years. In more recent history it served as hunting grounds for Cheyenne tribes before European settlement.

In addition to its natural beauty and recreational opportunities such as fishing or camping, it also hosts annual events like Buffalo Stampede Bike Ride attracting visitors from across state lines.

Swimming
1. Foss State Park offers a designated swimming area in the park's large reservoir, Lake Foss.
2. The lake is clean and safe for swimmers of all ages to enjoy.
3. Lifeguards are not on duty at this location so swim with caution.
4. Swimming aids like floaties or life jackets are recommended for children and weak swimmers.
5. Visitors can also engage in other water activities such as boating or fishing nearby the swimming area.

Boating
The park offers a variety of boating options for visitors. It features an expansive marina with boat rentals available, including paddle boats and canoes. There are also multiple launch ramps throughout the area to accommodate personal watercrafts. The large lake within the park is ideal for sailing, motor-boating or jet-skiing activities as well.

Picnicking
Foss State Park offers numerous picnic areas with tables and grills. Covered pavilions are available for larger gatherings.
Trails
1. Foss Lake Trail: This is a 2-mile trail that circles around the lake, offering stunning views of water and wildlife; it's perfect for bird watching.

2. Cottonwood Nature Trail: A short half mile loop located near the park office, this easy walk offers interpretive signs about local flora and fauna.

3. Sunset Beach Hiking Path: An approximately one-mile long path leading to Sunset beach from various camping areas in the park; suitable for all skill levels with beautiful sunset viewing opportunities over Foss Reservoir.

4. Bison Pasture Loop Road Walking Route: Though primarily used as a driving route through bison pasture area, visitors can also use this road as an informal walking or biking trail which covers roughly three miles round trip.

5. Sandy Cove Campground Trails: These are small trails spread throughout campground sites providing access to fishing docks on sandy cove area of reservoir; length varies depending upon campsite location but generally less than quarter mile each way.

6. Fishing Dock Access Paths: Short paths scattered across different parts of state park connecting parking lots with numerous fishing docks along shoreline; lengths vary between few hundred feet up-to half-a-mile based on dock locations relative to parking spots.

7. Park Office - Group Shelter Walkway: Approximately two-hundred yards paved pathway linking Park office building with group picnic shelter site overlooking main body of reservoir; ideal spot for enjoying panoramic view while having outdoor meals during day trips at State Park.
Bicycling
Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy a 5-mile paved trail, suitable for all skill levels. Helmets are strongly recommended.

The park's terrain varies from flat to hilly, offering different challenges for bikers of varying abilities.

Mountain biking is also an option on the off-road trails but requires caution due to rough and uneven surfaces.

Riders should be aware that they share paths with pedestrians and wildlife; respect and care must always be exercised.

Bike rentals may not always available onsite so bringing personal equipment might prove beneficial.

Remember: safety first! Always adhere strictly to posted rules regarding cycling within this natural reserve area.
Birding
Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting various species including the Western Meadowlark, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Bullock's Oriole. The park also offers birding tours for enthusiasts.

park review stars; one to five We travel from Pa to New Mexico and always hit Foss for a week on the way out and back and we love it. The Foss mystery of the two cars and six people is fascinating.
