DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION STATE FOREST
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) donated 1,020 acres to the Commonwealth for a state forest in 1929. Since then more than 750 additional acres have been acquired to include Upper and Lower Highland Lakes, which offer a popular swimming beach, shady picnic area and a group picnic pavilion. Located in the eastern foothills of the Berkshires, discover 15 miles of mixed-use trails through northern hardwood-conifer forest. Climb the Goshen fire tower for spectacular views of the Connecticut River Valley and into five states.
The campground offers 51 wooded campsites featuring modern comfort stations with showers and a private beach. Wheelchair accessible campsites are also available. In summer other activities include: non-motorized boating, hiking, fishing, horseback riding (bring your horse), and mountain biking. In winter ice fishing, skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are popular.
The Daughters of the American Revolution State Forest, also known as DAR State Forest, is located in Goshen, Massachusetts. The forest was named after the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a patriotic organization of female descendants of the American Revolutionary War soldiers.
The history of the DAR State Forest dates back to the early 20th century when the DAR, through fundraising efforts, purchased the land in 1929. The original intention was to create a recreational area that would provide opportunities for outdoor activities and preservation of natural resources. The DAR State Forest was formally dedicated on October 8, 1930, and became one of the first state forests in Massachusetts.
During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a significant role in the development of the forest. The CCC was a public work relief program that provided employment for young, unemployed men. These workers constructed various facilities in the DAR State Forest, including roads, trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds. Many of these structures can still be seen today, reflecting the architectural style and craftsmanship of the CCC.
The DAR State Forest has been managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The forest offers a wide range of recreational activities, including swimming, picnicking, camping, fishing, hiking, and boating. Visitors can explore the numerous trails within the forest, which provide access to scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, and streams.
The DAR State Forest continues to be an important natural and recreational resource in Massachusetts, attracting visitors from all over the state. It not only showcases the efforts of the DAR in preserving the memory of American Revolutionary War soldiers but also serves as a reminder of the significant role played by the CCC in creating public spaces for outdoor enjoyment.
